My writing
Writing has always been a love of mine — although to be honest, I find I much prefer having written to the act of writing, especially with fiction. Anyone who thinks writing isn’t hard work hasn’t written professionally (or is named Mike Resnick, who’s ability to just sit down and write quality prose both impresses and depresses me…)
I’m professionally published with both fiction and non-fiction, with my fiction writing being in the genre’s I grew up reading, Science Fiction and Fantasy. I’ve also done a fair amount of amateur publishing, back when desktop publishing was still an emerging trend — OtherRealms was something I published going back into the mid-80’s to experiment with bringing typographical design and a formal publishing process to the net, as well as doing a melded electronic/print publication. it wasn’t the first electronic publication, but it was a very early attempt to do something more than pass around email and text files. This web site is, in many ways, OtherRealms II, with a wider, more personal focus — more of my own writing, less editing other’s writing, and no real deadlines. I”ve also done a lot of technical writing for various companies, little of which I can publically admit to.
These days, I’m retired from writing professionally. Every so often I think about bringing back one of the novels or writing a tech article, but I lie down in a dark room until the mood passes. Writing well is hard work, and I don’t have time in my life for both writing and computer geekdom — and geekdom pays better. When you have two things you really enjoy, and one pays better, it only makes sense to focus on that — and unlike many successful writers, while I always wanted to be a writer, I never particularly had to be a writer, which meant I was always a lot less desperate than my fellow scribes… I expect I’ll start writing again once I retire from computers (or more correctly, retire full-time work…), but until then, I don’t expect to write much other than the informal work I do on-line, which I only do because I enjoy it (and I only do WHEN I enjoy it)
