A great piece in today’s NY Times: A Livable Shade of Green, by Nicholas D. Kristof, has the following to say:
Newly released data show that Portland, America’s environmental laboratory, has achieved stunning reductions in carbon emissions. It has reduced emissions below the levels of 1990, the benchmark for the Kyoto accord, while booming economically.
and somehow, I’m not surprised to see Portland pull this off. I’ve talked some about how San Jose can (and should have) learned from Portland in trying to rebuild their downtown core, but in reality, Portland has done many things that should be models for other cities — they’ve managed to keep their downtown core alive and vibrant, create an effective mass transit system, a strong commitment to greenbelts and open spaces, bike lanes , avoiding urban canyons, created a great little secondary shopping area up in NW 23rd, and now, they’re redeveloping the Pearl District and the old Brewery areas into a new urban residential area.
All things San Jose keeps saying they want to do — and Portland has done. hmm.
The one thing both places have in common? A wish to waste far too much money on the goal of bringing in Major League Baseball — where it seems ego is taking over for common sense.
