Chuq, I agree that Sun is finally Getting It and would be a good place to work. Too bad about the massive hemorrhaging and layoffs... And Java, ick. I think that's a language that, like C++ a few years ago, is now starting its long exit.
I must compliment you on considering Socialtext. It's nonobvious, and I have no idea what the company culture is like, but they seem to be poised at the brink of a lot of interest. I've also been wondering about Creative Commons and Archive.org.
Are there any Berkman-style tech think tanks in the Silicon Valley? I lament that I coudln't have worked for Berkman when I lived in Boston.

> I continue to wander the halls of Apple
> with a signboard saying "will work for
> food", but so far, it's been quiet.
This reminds me of that WKRP episode where Lester decided to quit. This caused his coworkers to plead with him to stay. So Herb, noticing all of the positive attention Lester was getting, also decided to quit. Instead of pleads to stay all he got was encouragement on his new endeavors.
