Yahoos get LinkedIn – Yodel Anecdotal:

One of Reid’s most interesting responses came when he was asked why, if LinkedIn was a social network, there weren’t photos of the users on the site. Great question! Photos, he said, were complex in the business world. They could even lead to discrimination based on age, sex, and race, and LinkedIn didn’t want to facilitate that. Reid thinks there’s a place for photos in a professional context, but LinkedIn is still figuring out the right social balance.

Okay, this is cool. I’d noticed he lack of photos on Linkedin, and it was clear it wasn’t an oversight, but I didn’t see an obvious reason why they were avoiding it. duh. Another reason why I’ve kept up LinkedIn where the other social networking sites (like Orkut) I gave up on fairly quickly.

actually, two things cool about this. the other is that Yahoo is having these kinds of get togethers. Apple — should be — just as other companies should make time to cross-fertilize and network and share. But isn’t is increasingly so that companies seem to be too busy to find time for non-essentials? (quick, rhetorical quiz: does your company have educational benefits? Do they actually allow you to use them? Do you have the time and energy to use them if they’d let you? Just asking…)

But — let’s defer further discussion of this for a couple of weeks…
