Pack Your Camera’s Battery Charger – O’Reilly Digital Media Blog:
While I was packing for my recent trip to Ireland, I mentioned to Derrick Story that I had three fully charged (proprietary) batteries ready for my Canon point-and-shoot. When he asked if I’d packed my charger, I said I thought that three batteries should be enough, but he insisted I take it. (His words, I believe were, “Wrongo.”) I’m writing this post in an act of public contrition for ever thinking otherwise.
Let’s face it, chargers don’t take up much room; mine has the collapsable plug that renders it about the size of a deck of cards.
What Colleen said, in spades. In fact, I bought a second charger for my Canon as well as spare batteries, so there’s a charger in my bag AND a charger in my office, and I’m never tempted to forget it in the wrong place — and yes, I bought the second charger while I was travelling, because I had, in fact, left it at home; I lost half a day in Vancouver finding a GOOD camera store that had one in stock.
Also, spare batteries don’t help much if you don’t have them in your pocket. Not that I would ever do this, but I had this friend who hiked the most part of a mile out into a marsh chasing birds only to find out the battery was fading and needed replacing; by the fully charged battery sitting warm and snug in the bag in the trunk of the car. (ditto that “spare” flash card, too!)
It’s easy to pack this stuff. it’s also easy to forget it. Making sure you have these things is a habit you need to create. The one time you say “hey, I’ll be okay” is when the martians decide to land, only to have your battery go dead 3 shots in…..
