I mean, there’s so much added value in being in San Francisco. I was at a press conference last summer where the architects only talked about how great it was to build in a World City. But I guess a view of the Great America/Psycho Mouse skyline is equally as appealing. (By the way, after that July news conference I joked that there’s no way this thing would be built any time soon. We all laughing now?)
So how much more would Santa Clara have to give up to match the value and please JY? A ton. Too much, probably.
So what’s this really all about?
1. York’s pride. He knows the NFL would love for him to sell the 49ers to a stronger local owner–hello, Larry Ellison! He knows every other owner mumbles about the value of the SF market… and how York’s failures are eroding it.
But dammit, he wants a great deal and he’s not going to let anybody prevent that! He’s a negotiator, which leads to…2. It’s a ploy. A loud ploy. But a ploy to shake up SF and get… whatever it is he wants. Barbecues in the parking lot? Good lighting fluid available at low cost in the Bayview District?
He has put a ton of effort and time into a New Candlestick. It’d be crazy to give it away because of a few details. He’s probably waiting for a reaction… and he wants to be pulled back to the negotiating table.3. He wants LA to know he’s flirting. That’s the big deal, obviously.
Tim kawakami has a good look at the reality of the train-wreck that the 49ers have become, and their new stadium non-plan. good reading. I really like the idea of York going to LA with an expansion team and selling the 49ers to Ellison, personally. So it won’t happen.
