Daring Fireball: Palm CEO Ed Colligan’s Head Seems to be Stuck Somewhere:

No, no. What I like best is where Colligan says Palm has “struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone.” Isn’t it possible that, if Apple is indeed entering the mobile phone market, that Apple has also struggled with the problem for a few years? It’s just that Apple hasn’t been selling their less-than-decent designs along the way, like Palm has. (It’s also certainly the case that an Apple phone would aspire to something better than “decent”.)

funny thing, sort of. All indications I get are that Palm (and Palmsource, and Palmone, and whatever other iterations, re-orgs, spin-offs, pull-ins and other regroupings I may have missed recently) simply don’t have a clue. So of course, they rip Apple. If there’s a company I might be scared of, if I were Palm, it would be that Apple IS going to walk into the market and show how this stuff should be done.

Especially since Palm’s latest offerings are, well — okay the Palm 680 is basically the Palm 650, but cost reduced and with the bugs fixed. or most of them. Or something. Otherwise, there’s not a lot to see here for someone who (like me) has a 650 already. And the Palm 700 is, well, delayed for a while because of rumored delays in the FCC. but even the rumored Treo 700 is, like, seriously whelming to me.

Laurie’s ready to upgrade her Treo 600. Me, I’m comfortable with the Treo 650, but only because I’ve tossed on some stuff to make it really useful to me, since Palm abandoned their Mac desktop software (thank you, Mark/Space). but I certainly don’t see anything on the horizon that makes me feel warm and toasty about buying another Treo.

I”ve been considering the Nokia 9300 — it’s a Symbian phone, with a full keyboard, IM, email, texting. stuff I want. Definitely seeems to be more going on there than on Palm these days.

But also, given we’re in december and in no hurry, I’m waiting until after Macworld. Just in case. If the rumors are right, I expect we’ll see some stuff that might well be worth waiting for.
