Record January for NHL attendance
Record January for NHL attendance:
The NHL attracted 3,193,093 fans to 187 games and posted a 17,075 per-game average for the month, the highest in the league’s 89-year history.
The per-game figure, which represents 92.3 per cent of capacity, was 1.7 per cent higher than last January’s 16,795 average.
Overall, the league is down 0.5 per cent from last season through the same number of games.
The NHL says league-wide average attendance has increased month by month: 16,537 in October, 16,538 in November, 16,850 in December and 17,075 in January.
This is good news.
As I’ve pointed out before, the early drop in attendance this year was primarily due to drops in St. Louis and Boston and New Jersey. The blues have picked it up nicely, recovering from their really ugly start, and the fans seem to have responded.
another reason why you have to be careful looking at small samples, or making strong opinions based on incomplete data. There was really funky weather early in the season, some really bad hockey in a few cities, and a bit of hangover from last year’s “post lockout dream season”. And now things seem back pretty much to parity, and I wouldn’t be at all suprised to see it build from here this season.
