News – Sharks Clean Out Lockers, Prepare For Summer – San Jose Sharks:

EXTENT OF SHARKS INJURIES REVEALED

Sharks center and fan-favorite Mark Smith revealed on Tuesday that in addition to the sore groin that kept him out of the lineup for more than 30 games this season, he also suffered from a sports hernia that will be surgically repaired next week.

Smith, who is also an unrestricted free agent, expressed interest in remaining a Shark just before explaining the extent of his injuries.

“Obviously I’d like to stay in San Jose,” said Smith. “I love the city and I love the fans.”

Captain Patrick Marleau revealed that he played the final stretch of the regular season and the playoffs with a separated shoulder. The injury, which he likely sustained on Feb. 14 in a game against Nashville, kept the captain out of five regular season games.

“It just needs some time and some rest,” said Marleau.

so part of the “where’s Marleau” question is answered by “he’s been playing with a separated shoulder”.

Which raises the question, why didn’t the coaches let Marleau rest it in the regular season, since he injured it in February? The idea behind Thornton and Marleau, 1-2, I thought, was that most teams can only target one scoring center, opening up space for the other one.
Marleau at 70% with a separated shoulder isn’t good enough in the playoffs, clearly. We may as well have played Pavelski in Marleau’s slot for the rest of the regular season, giving Marleau a better chance to heal and then do some damange in the playoffs. Instead, the Wings dared the forwards not named Thornton/Cheechoo/Michalek to score, and they didn’t.
