Hockey Rants:

If you thought the New Jersey Devils holding a Stanley Cup ‘parade party’ in a parking lot was bad, check out what the Ducks are doing.

There won’t be a Stanley Cup parade in Anaheim, although it won’t be because of traffic issues. Instead, there will be a rally at the Honda Center tomorrow night, if the locals haven’t already forgotten about this Stanley Cup victory.

Folks, I grew up down there. Here’s a problem. Unless you consider Downtown Disney a downtown, Anaheim doesn’t have one. The only way you’ll be able to have a parade is shoving those guys on floats on Main Street disneyland — and Disney sold the team (gee, Disney sells the Angels, and they go to the world series in a couple of years; sell the Ducks, win the Cup a year later. An absolute coincidence, I’m sure)

Laurie, in fact, had the best line about this, as the game was winding down, she turned to me and said “they won’t have a parade, there’s no downtown for one. What are they going to do? All get in their cars and drive somewhere for the riot?”

If you haven’t been to the Pond, um, Honda Center, it’s against a freeway, near nothing but Anaheim Stadium (home of the Angels, former home of the Rams, VERY former home of the USFL Express, but I’m just dating myself). It’s you’re classic suburban “surrounded by parking lots” place.

So I’m not surprised. They really don’t have much of a place to have a parade, not in Anaheim. I suggested a riot and a grunion hunt down at the beach, but Laurie just looked at me with that look I get…

They whined about what the Canes did last year, too — while the city argued about which street to use since the optimal one was torn up for construction, the arena authority ran a party in the parking lot.
Surprising to see Jes running this particular canned complaint, since ordinarily that one comes mostly from TO/Rangers/Detroit fans, but I guess he’s never one to pass up a cheap shot at U.S. markets.
