Aperture and Leopard for early adopters

The following is a public service announcement about running Aperture 1.5.6 on the new Leopard release…..

When Apple warns that running Time Machine while Aperture is open is a bad idea, believe them. Fortunately, since the master raw images aren’t touched, it’s easily recoverable and non-destructive, but I just had a situation where I forgot, and it started scrambling images; the proper image showed up in the thumbnails, but it was bringing up different images in the main display. oops.

Now, overall, Aperture on Leopard seems to be going pretty well. It’s pretty heavy duty in using memory and VM, and since those areas are much improved in Leopard, so it’s Aperture’s performance.

I’ve seen the desktop stop responding to mouse clicks under heavy VM activity where stuff’s getting paged out while Aperture sucks RAM, but clicking on the finder icon in the dock brought it back.

Overall, I’m seeing a few (mostly cosmetic) rough edges, but 10.5.0 seems about the equivalent in stability as 10.4.2 — and massively faster and more responsive. And Aperture has definitely benefitted, but be careful with Time Machine. They’re not kidding.
