Living with Leopard, the “couple of weeks” update..

Been running Leopard for a bit, and so here’s a bit of a status update…

Not a whole lot to report. The only issues I’ve been seeing have been primarily cosmetic. I updated to 10.5.1 with no problems. No signficant compatibility issues, and overall, I’m pretty happy.

The dock doesn’t bother me like it does some; of course, I keep it on the right side of the screen (as god really intended) not at the bottom. I haven’t played with spaces yet, but I plan to. I haven’t played with stacks yet, but I plan to. I needed to get the disks and backups and a long-planned re-arrangement of my home office done (so I actually could, like, use my desk for working on), and now I’ll do more exploring.

There are two things I desperately want Apple to fix. First, I, like some others, have found that sharing a printer via your airport is pretty broken. I had to reattach the Canon to my laptop and share it from the computer. 10.5.1 doesn’t seem to have fixed this (gah).

And then there’s the menu bar. Here’s what mine looks like right now (because my desktop is rotating through my photo library….):

I agree with everyone else having a cow over this little UI braincramp. The only explanation is that most of the folks making the decision are using really boring desktops without a lot of patterning, and if you look at the standard ones issued in OS X, that’s easy to do. And the people internally who probably screamed about this got ignored by those who didn’t see it as a problem. well, it is. I know there are hacks out there that can work around some of this — but I hate those kind of hacks, because they tend to lead to problems later with updates and compatibility, so I’d rather live with it (for now). But Apple really screwed it here, and needs to fix this. hell, it doesn’t have to be opaque. It just has to be MORE opaque than it currently is….

other than that? I’m pretty damn happy.
