Apple releases MacBook, MacBook Pro Software Update 1.2 – The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW):


That’s because Apple just released a software update for the new MacBook and MacBook Pro. Seriously, they couldn’t have updated them at the factory?

Um, no, because they’ve been building these for probably six to eight weeks, stuffing them in containers and putting them on ships to come to the states, and that implies that the software probably froze and was set up on the manufacturing line two months ago, and since then, they’ve fixed a lot of stuff.

What, you think these boxes all appear via magic?

Actually, this is a competitive strength of Apple: since Apple users (in general) aren’t afraid of installing software updates, Apple really can plan in a way that presumes updates will get installed and so they don’t have to make sure everything is fixed before they ship. They can work ahead and make sure that out of the box the thing works, but know that anything that crops up can get fixed when the user installs and turns the beast on.

That’s a hell of a lot cheaper and easier than having to unbox everything and reload updated software is a nasty bug appears at the last minute (been there, done that. not fun).

    Does the MacBook Air have the port? No, because Apple is moving things wirelessly and the MacBook is just a step above that. If you want all the ports, I guess get a Pro machine. For most of us, my guess is that not many are using Firewire to justify it.

    I agree that leaving out the firewire port is a major bad move from Apple. Apple also has not adjusted their prices either (see current laptop prices from other vendors). A $100 less on a “old” model is pathetic. I love Apple, but they need to keep up with the market.

    Chuck, I would be very interested in your opinion on Apple leaving the Firewireport out on the new MacBook. As for many others (see the forums) it is a no-buy for me. It almost feels like a slap in the face.
