Did Some Insider Just Spill The Beans On New Apple Laptop?

Why does everything suck?: Did Some Insider Just Spill The Beans On New Apple Laptop?:

Sure would be cool if they sold a product that could be used as a laptop or a desktop, a la Mac Mini. $600.00 for the ‘brick’ and you get what’s essentially a Mac Mini. $800 gets you the same thing with a bright, sharp, fully detachable 13″ display. Not that I would be in a position to know…I just like leaving cryptic comments. And I drink beer at B.J.s on DeAnza a lot.

Fascinating. People may not have picked up the reference, but DeAnza is one of the main streets running through Apple’s cupertino campus. The implication is that he is in the know. A detachable desktop/portable Mac as implied here for $800 would be awesome.

Um…. no. but someone did seem to be trying to play games with the rumors and the hype going on.

Another great example of why taking this stuff so seriously only makes you grumpy. My only question is whether this was just some random fan boy having a bit of fun, or someone within Infinite Loop having it at the rumor geeks…

The guy has a long history of commenting on CNET, back into 2007. Mostly with a snark and a sneer, it seems.

I’d bet that it is, in fact, an Apple person. CNET’s well known for not being Apple’s friend, and his commentary seems to be a combination of fac checking their butts and venting a bit against The Man.

What I do know is that any rumor that shows up first in the comment section at CNET is pretty much guaranteed to be wrong. That’s not a place anyone with real information would choose to open a leak. There are too many other places with higher profiles and better reputations, so I presumed up front it was bogus. And it was.

I would buy a thin “Newton sized” iPhone in a heartbeat. I spend more time pinching, expanding and scrolling on the iPod Touch than I do actually viewing content because the screen is way too small for delivery of most content.
If the device was say 3.8″ wide it would still fit in one hand (most people). Giving it a height of 7.5 or 8″ would allow a huge screen for email/web/documents and very conveniently be a proper 16:9 display for movies when turned on its side.

I don’t think it’s as far from the truth as you would believe. The new 24″ display seems custom made for a new Mac mini. Put one on your desk at work and one at home and carry the brick back and forth. If they use the same motherboard as the MacBook, which now very conveniently has all the ports on one side, the brick would have very low production costs and decent performance at the same time. I see another money-maker for Apple.

I dunno if it’s games so much as an idea that wants to be born… there’s a vacuum that could be filled by something with ‘touch OS’ but for people with fat fingers and weak eyes. People who just want to surf and send email, don’t need a general-purpose computer.
We all know Apple can fill that vacuum, with class.

“Another great example of why taking this stuff so seriously only makes you grumpy.” I took it too seriously, check. I am now grumpy, check. Guilty as charged.
