Memo to all Toronto Maple Leafs fans

Subject: When to cheer for the Leafs

Dear Toronto Maple Leafs fans: when your team is down 5-1 with 30 seconds to play and has been basically handled by a bored Sharks team all game, you should really stop and think a second about whether you should stand up and start yelling “Leafs rule!” and dissing the Sharks fans who’s building you are currently standing in.

In case it wasn’t obvious, losing 5-2 instead of losing 5-1 is not anything remotely like a moral victory, much less a real one.

When your team is losing badly, it’s best to perhaps be a bit less blind to the fact the team is being spanked. It only makes you look stupid — although we understand given the Leaf’s success over the years why even scoring a goal can make you think your team did something positive.

This especially means you, the guy in the Palmateer jersey and the guy in the jersey and touque in 128 who blamed the refs for everything tonight including global warming.

But thank you for not being obnoxious and annoying like Flyer’s and Red Wings fans.

By actually only cheering when the team is ahead — I realize that’s a rare accomplishment these days — you won’t come across like drunken fools. But then again, you’re Leafs fans. Maybe being drunk makes that easier for you…

    Subject: When to cheer for the Leafs
    Dear San Jose Shark fans: When the coach that took you from 4th worst record in the league in 2002-3 to 4 straight 99-plus point seasons comes back to your hometown, remind yourselves where you were 6 years ago. Have a little humility and show some tolerance, as you have not suffered 41 years of heartache as have we.
    Yes, when we score we cheer. When we win, we cheer. When we are down we cheer. We cheer even when it is impossible to win as it was last night. We are fans, thus we cheer. Do not deny us even this little thing.
    And yes, the alcohol certainly helps. I was 2 years old when the Leafs last won the Stanley Cup, and I’ve been drinking heavily since.
    You are the tops. Enjoy it while it lasts. The season is a long one. May good fortune be yours.
