Okay, we had a little fun on twitter today, just because we could.
Hmm. Maybe I should have the “guess where chuqui’s new job is?” game. Free print of one of my photos to the first person to guess
(that I haven’t already told, of course)
Upside: could have some fun. Might generate some buzz. Amusing to see the really silly suggestions.
Downside: ego totally crushed when I realize only two people care enough to play the game, and one is my mom.
And we had some fun with it. My favorite guess was a Microsoft Repair Shop. A number of people guessed Apple.
I actually did do a little exploring at Apple when I started looking around, including some positions open in the iPhone group. My friend on the inside looked at those positions and asked me “why are you considering that? you told me you wanted a life!” and that pretty much ended that. When I was there, I’d steer people away from certain organizations I knew to be rather gung-ho on schedules (shall we say), like the Apple online store folks. It’s never a bad idea to trust someone trying to protect you from yourself….
Now, I suppose I could drag this on for a while, but sooner or later, I’ll just piss everyone off. So I won’t. No real need, but it was fun having a ltitle fun.
So anyway, Friday the 13th is my last day at Laszlo, and starting on the 16th I’m going to become the Developer Community Manager at Palm, working with the new Pre phone SDK. I am absolutely jazzed, too, and can’t wait.
So how did this happen? Well, that gets complicated….

A team of mine has been working on the Palm Pre for the past year and a half. It is an exciting project and this is a great time to be joining the developer relations group there. They have some really good people in that new group and I am sure they are looking forward to getting you on board. I look forward to working with you in the future.

Does this position have to do with that post that Andrew Shebanow made asking for feedback? (http://shebanation.com/2009/01/14/post-removed/). I remember he had updated the post to say that the response was overwhelming and Palm didn't know quite how to handle it.
I guess they found a solution, in you.
congratulations!
for now. I intend to not renew it at the end of the contract, assuming we do our jobs right. I'll also probably carry both a work and personal phone. There's still a time and place for separating the two and not completely merging the two lifes, I think.
Very exciting! They are lucky to have you!! Are you keeping your iPhone?
Not directly. They were already looking for someone for this position when that happened, and I'd already applied for it but hadn't started interviewing. It was a point of discussion in the interviews, obviously… (grin)
I think its safe to say we think there are opportunities here in “not being like Apple”, but in reality, nothing matters if the product is good, and making the product as good as we can is what really matters. But my primary role is to communicate, both out to developers and to listen and bring information back into the company, so that should give some idea of what we hope to have happen.
as soon as it's ready? I”ll know more once I actually start the job. until then, I'm guessing, too.
Congrats! So… when do we get a peek at Mojo?
Congratulations. It'll be interesting to see how you put your beliefs about feedback and community to work, and how it will compare with the iPhone developer community
Aaaahhhhh. Palm that is. I am so happy for you Chuq, what a great gig! I wish i had a similar opportunity *right now*.
