Where are they now? Ed Courtenay

For all you really old Sharks fans out there, a quick where are they now — Ed Courtenay.

Ed’s still playing hockey, and playing in Britain.

Courtenay is teh subject of one of my favorite all time radio “moments” in Sharks history:

Dan Rusanowsky: It’s a breakaway!

Dennis Hull: No, it’s Courtenay.

Dennis Hull was right. Never the fleetist of feet in the NHL, Courtenay still was one of those guys who brought the effort every night in the early (really sucky!) days of San Jose Sharks history….

  • I spent a season as an on-ice official (Referee most of the time, Linesman occasionally) in the UK. The best game I ever watched (as a spectator the Referee has figuratively the best "seat" in the house!) was at the very rink in Bracknell where Courtenay's interviewer from the BBC met him. The BBC blogger is wrong saying that only one ex-NHL'er has played in the UK though. I can recall a few others. Jim McTaggart (ex- Washington Capitals) for one.
