I have the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 HSM for my Nikon D700, and I concur with David, it's a very sharp lens, and a reasonable lower cost alternative to the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8. I've also seen reviews that rate it equal to the Canon 24-70 f/2.8. I am not as big on the telephoto end as you are, so my walk around choices are likely different, but for touring Vegas recently I took the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 on my D700, and threw my Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 in a hip pouch for the really wide shots (the Sigma 12-24mm is not a DC "crop" lens). I could see putting a telephoto in the hip pouch instead. That said, I'd lean towards the 15-85 or something in that range for a crop body -- 24-70 is great on full frame, but not really wide or long on a crop body.
