Dell do an "all in one" option with a mini case attached to the monitor stand - not quite as sleek as the iMac of course, but a wider, flatter Mac Mini could well attach to the back of the monitor with good results. More or less a MacBook (Air) motherboard, repackaged. In fact, if it used the power+Thunderbolt connector the current displays have, the computer part wouldn't need other ports: it could be a thin flat insert between the mount and the monitor itself.

Having said that, Apple seem to be heading in exactly the opposite direction: rather than efficient and flexible modular options, increasingly sealed units with almost no upgrade potential: soldering both storage and RAM in place, now, as well as the battery.

You don't know why PCIe slots exist?
If you want to have same bandwidth to your headless desktop (=mac mini) or iMac, you need 8 TB sockets. If next MP will adopt PCIe 3.0 like all other workstations already have, you'd need 16 TB sockets. "One form factor, multiple price/performance points" will then mean quite a bit bigger form factor for mac mini.

I agree with MacRat. I've toyed with this idea myself... It doesn't make sense these days for the Mac Pro to be such a large enclosure. How many people really use more than an expansion slot or two? Or a drive or two? Make a small form factor, and then have a separate thunderbolt PCI expansion bus case. Hook up a Thunderbolt hard drive enclosure for more drive storage.
