The Snowy Plover is a small wading bird that lives on beaches and along the shorelines of water. It builds a nest in a small depression in the sand, which puts it at risk of being killed or injured by predators or when people drive vehicles on nesting beaches without taking care. The Snowy Plover is considered a species at risk due to declining habitat for them to nest in, and is listed as endangered in several states.
These birds were photographed at Guadalupe Dunes park on the central California coast, one of the beaches that they nest at successfully every year.
